At Arnold Farms, we endeavour to look after the environment in whatever way we can when undertaking our farming duties. We are in the environmental Entry Level Scheme - this means that we manage some of our farmland in order to maintain and increase biodiversity.

Field margins are usually the least productive areas of a field, and at Arnold Farms when cultivating our fields, we leave wide field margins. They provide great nesting sites for ground nesting birds such as partridges and may also increase numbers of beneficial insects and spiders that feed on arable crop pests.

Hedges are retained in order to encourage bird life, and when hedge cutting is necessary, it is done so carefully and diligently so as to minimise the impact on the environment. We also plant Mustard and Rye as cover crops in our rotation.

Cover crops have the potential to: cut fertiliser costs, reduce the need for herbicides and pesticides, enhance soil health (improving yields), prevent soil erosion and conserve soil moisture.

This scheme includes areas sown with wild bird seed mixtures and wild flowering plants that attract nectar feeding insects such as bees. Care is also taken when applying a suitable crop rotation as this minimises the need for the chemical control of pests, weeds and diseases.

Where possible, after combining, we try to leave the stubble over the winter - this provides a foraging ground for a wide range of birds. It also helps to maintain the soil structure and avoid erosion. Careful management of hedgerows is also a vital area in which Arnold Farms takes.
